Some We Asked Earlier
What does it mean to play for the Barbarians?
It's the closest you get to playing for a World 15. It's still the shirt that everyone wants to wear!
How does playing for the Barbarians differ from playing for your Country?
It's far more relaxed and the fear of failure is non existent. You just want to go out, express yourself and entertain. When you're playing with such world class players, you know that if you try something special then more likely than not, someone quality will be on the end of it and it will succeed!
What makes the Baa-Baas such an enduring and well loved rugby brand?
It's the history behind the shirt and the fact that everyone wants to re-enact those famous tries. Four or five of the world's greatest tries have been scored by a Barbarians team. I also love the fact that the Barbarians always have an un-capped player.
What are the qualities that you associate with the Barbarians?
Freedom... fun, respect, trust, discipline. It's all the words you normally associate with rugby but with an added top hat and tails!
What do you think is the best ever Barbarians game?
It's got to be 1973, it's the one I grew up watching.
And the best ever 'Barbarian'?
There's lots to choose from - all the 'greats' have played for them! Serge Blanco, Gareth Edwards, Phil Bennett, Carlos Spencer spring to mind. Oh and Bryan Habana. Scoring a hat-trick against the All Blacks in the inaugural MasterCard Trophy game would have to put him right up there.
